A blog about my the history, acquisition and operation of my 1911 Model 62 Stanley Steamer.

The New Sight Glass

Once we got the Stanley fired up with a full head of steam we noticed that the boiler sight glass had a slight steam leak which was quite bothersome being that it has a live steam line running to it. You can actually see evidence of the leak in the second photograph. We attempted to snug it up but it became apparent that gasket would need to be completely replaced. After speaking at length with Pat Farrell it was decided that unit really wasn't appropriate for the vehicle in terms of size or pressure rating so it should be replaced with a modern unit. The way the old unit was setup it would have showed an inch and a half of water in the gauge when the boiler was bone dry! The new unit was plumbed with stainless steel fittings and mounted tight to the firewall to provide more room in the passenger compartment.  It fit really well, only requiring the oil winker plumbing to be changed slightly.
