Blog

A blog about my the history, acquisition and operation of my 1911 Model 62 Stanley Steamer.

A touch of history

This is post one for my blog on owning and operating a 1911 Stanley. To give you a brief history I've known this vehicle my whole life and it was owned by a close friend of mine, Vern Wellburn. As a child I spent majority of my time during antique car tours hanging around the steamer and going for rides when Vern had a spare moment. As the time passed and I got old enough to drive Vern took me on as an "apprentice" and he taught me the ins and outs of operating his steamer. Over the years I had the privilege of joining him on a steam car tour and visiting him on the island for driving lessons. Looking back on those great times I only now realize how much more I really had to learn to operate this vehicle by myself.

On May 11th 2012, at 87, Vern lost a battle with illness and passed away. He believed that his antique vehicles should remain in private collections and be toured so the public could truly appreciate them. I agree whole heartedly and I intend on doing just that.
